DESCRIPTION:

The Symphony presents a program of promise and prosperity?both things Antonin Dvorak saw when he visited the United States in the late nineteenth century. His New World Symphony is paired with Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, performed by Chinese virtuoso Tianwa Yang. From the old “new world” to the new, classical music continues to transcend and grow.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the competition is to encourage and foster the development of young musicians in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

COMPETITION

Time: May 19, 2012 -- 9:00 a.m.

Place: The Toledo Symphony Orchestra Symphony Space, 1838 Parkwood Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43604

Competition attendance is free. Teachers, family, and friends are encouraged to attend.

ELIGIBILITY

Piano, string, woodwind, brass, and percussion students enrolled in grades 6 through 12 on the competition date and living within the area served by The Toledo Symphony Orchestra are eligible. Previous winners may not apply if performing on the same instrument.

AWARDS

Each of the three winners will appear as a soloist with The Toledo Symphony at one of the TSO’s public performances and will receive the 2012 cash prize of $500 at the time of his or her performance.

FEE

An entry fee of $25.00 (nonrefundable) must accompany the application form. Checks should be made payable to The Toledo Symphony League.

Every year the TSO travels across northwest Ohio, bringing their talents to venues such as: Sauder's Village, The University of Findlay, St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Fostoria, OH and St. Andrew's Episcopal. During a regular TSO season, we perform over 30 neighborhood & regional concerts, including 16 performances just for the Holiday Season.

Old West end Festival / Toledo Symphony Stampede
5k Walk & Run
Sunday, June 3, 2012

The OWE/Toledo Symphony 5k Stampede kicks off the second day of festival weekend Sunday morning at 9am. You start and finish this certified 5k race with the world famous Toledo Museum of Art as your backdrop. The run/walk has grown each year in popularity with the regional running community. The 5k winds its way through the historic tree-lined streets of Toledo's Old West End Neighborhood while having the Toledo Symphony Orchestra's performers play from the front porches of the wonderful homes along the route. Enjoy the run, enjoy the neighborhood, shower up at the historic Collingwood Presbyterian and enjoy the festival after.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
5k Race & Walk begins at 9:00 a.m. Rain or shine.

Location:
Old West End, Toledo. Race begins in front of the Professional Building at the corner of Parkwood and Monroe (1838 Parkwood).

Parking:
FREE parking is available in the Toledo Museum of Art Parking Lot located at Oakwood Ave. off Collingwood close to the University of Toledo Center for Visual Arts (East end of the main museum complex).

Course:
The course is certified and pre-set, and will be managed by the Toledo Road Runners Club. USATF certified (OH 04017 PR). Paved and fast, electronic timing, splits and 1 & 2 miles.
Live music marks the course!

Age Groups:
Male and female divisions in each of the following categories:
14 and under; 15-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70 & over

Race Awards:
A pair of 2012-2013 Toledo Symphony Classics Series Subscriptions for each overall male and female winner UNDER 40, and for each overall male and female winner 40 AND OVER; a pair of tickets to a 2012-2013 Toledo Symphony concert for the first three runners in each age group/gender category. Walkers & runners must be present to win!

In October, the museum will unveil theirManet: Portraying Life exhibition. To help them celebrate, we’ve prepared a program of Francophile classics. Great French Romanticists Chabrier, Franck and Berlioz were all contemporariesof the gifted Manet. Toledo favorite Frances Renzi returns to perform Franck’s masterful Symphonic Variations, a delightful dialogue between piano and orchestra.
