David Saltzman

David Saltzman has been the Principal Tuba player of the Toledo Symphony and the Tuba/Euphonium instructor at Bowling Green State University since 2007. He is also the director of the Bowling Green State University Tuba/Euphonium ensemble. Prior to these appointments, David had been the Principal Tuba player for the Honolulu Symphony and the Honolulu Brass Quintet since 1997. He was also the Tuba/Euphonium instructor at the University of Hawaii, Manoa campus and the founder and director of the University of Hawaii’s Tuba/Euphonium ensemble. David has performed with several orchestras throughout the United States and Canada, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Windsor Symphony.
His undergraduate degree came from Indiana University where he was a student of both Harvey Phillips and Daniel Perantoni. While at Indiana, David was awarded a Performer's Certificate in recognition of his exceptional performance at the school. After graduating in 1996, David went to the University of Michigan to study under Fritz Kaenzig, Principal Tuba player with the Grant Park Symphony in Chicago. Most recently, David returned to the mainland to finish his master's degree at the Peabody Conservatory and studied with Toby Hanks from 2001-2003. During that time, David also studied with David Fedderly, Principal Tuba player with the Baltimore Symphony and a faculty member teaching Tuba at the Juilliard School of Music.
David was the winner of the Colonial Euphonium Tuba Quartet's first Tuba Solo Competition in Albany, New York in 1996. He has performed as a featured soloist at the British Tuba Euphonium Convention in Birmingham, England as well as the International Women's Brass Conference held in 1997 in St. Louis, Missouri.
David and his wife Barbara are the proud parents of their daughter, Eve Birdie, who was born on July 18th, 2004 and their son, Isaac Henry, who was born on April 7, 2007. They also have two “fur-children” Stucci and Lady, toy and miniature poodles, born in 1998. David and his family enjoy spending time together, reading and exploring the many metro-parks and trails near their home.
