Pageantry theme for Peristyle concerts
There were no lions, no tigers, no bears last night in the Toledo Museum of Art's historic concert hall.
But, oh my, the circus was in town nonetheless.
And how welcome all the hoopla was as a January program, led mostly by resident conductor Jeffrey Pollock in his no doubt memorable Peristyle debut.
Without question, hundreds of brave music lovers were present to hear the dramatic "Roman Carnival" Overture by Hector Berlioz; the sensual score by Aram Khachaturian for the blockbuster film Spartacus, and the transcendent tone poem "Pines of Rome" by Ottorino Respighi with its only-in-Toledo addition of the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps marching in for maximum effect.
And those present will not soon forget the Toledo premiere of John Corigliano's thundering "Circus Maximus," a three-ring musical event featuring not just the Toledo Symphony but the Bowling Green State University Wind Symphony, led by ringmaster Bruce Moss.
Still, two people who had wanted to attend missed the show.
First, composer Corigliano, who had tried mightily to make it to Toledo, was in the end unable to attend.
Second, your trusty critic was a no-show, semisidelined with a broken wrist since Friday the 13th. I chose discretion as the greater part of valor and stayed home, deterred by falling snow, disappointed to miss the wonderful evening.
The program will repeat at 8 p.m. today in the Peristyle, for which, according to the symphony's Ashley Mirakian, only 100 tickets remained as of Friday. Those who may have hoped to trade tickets at the last minute and those who simply put off buying until the last minute need to act early to snag a seat.
Tickets are $20-$50 at 419-246-8000 or at toledosymphony.com.
And for those who, like me, missed the show, there is this thought, courtesy of the great critic H.L. Mencken: "Today's most prevalent circus is in the political arena."
