Grammy Award-winning recording artist and Oscar nominated actress Queen Latifah will make her debut with the Toledo Symphony on November 10, 2018 at 8 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater. Fifth Third Bank acts as title sponsor for this one-night-only Spotlight event.

With a Grammy Award and six nominations for albums in jazz, pop, rap, and dozens of film and television roles, the accomplished and multi-talented Queen Latifah will bring to the Peristyle stage a genre-defying program featuring selections for which she is best known, including jazz standards from her 2007 album Trav’lin’ Light, and songs from popular musicals including Chicago, Hairspray, and more.

Aside from music, Queen Latifah also has an extensive film career. She is most acclaimed for her film role in the 2002 hit musical Chicago, starring Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Renee Zellweger. Her portrayal of prison matron Mama Morton gave her the opportunity to showcase both her singing talents and acting skills, earning her an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her work in the film. She went on to receive strong reviews in the romantic comedy Bringing Down the House (2003), Beauty Shop (2005), Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006), Hairspray (2007), Mad Money (2008), The Secret Life of Bees (2008), and the 2012 TV remake of Steel Magnolias.

“Queen Latifah needs no introduction,” says Toledo Symphony President & CEO Zak Vassar. “Her extraordinary career has spanned all genres of music, film, and television, but she’s more than that. She’s an inspiration to so many people and uses her success to make a difference in the lives of people in underserved communities. We are incredibly proud to bring Queen Latifah to Toledo as part of our 75th Anniversary season.”

Queen Latifah has established herself as one of music’s most well-respected artists. She made her ground-breaking appearance in 1989 with her hit album All Hail the Queen. Since then, she has been nominated for Best Female Rap Solo Performance for Go Head in 2004, Best Jazz Vocal Album for The Dana Owens Album in 2005, and was nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Trav’lin Light in 2008. Queen Latifah has recently performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra in 2017. In August, 2018, she will join the Los Angeles Philharmonic for an evening of soul-infused entertainment at their annual Jazz at the Bowl.

Bob LaClair, President of Fifth Third Bank Northwestern Ohio, is excited for the concert. “Fifth Third Bank is proud to act as the title sponsor for Queen Latifah’s appearance with the Toledo Symphony. Fifth Third has been a long-standing supporter of the arts in Toledo, and we are happy to help bring such a talented musician to our community. It will be a memorable night at the Peristyle, and we are thrilled to be part of the Toledo Symphony’s 75th Anniversary season.”
