Tales and Dances

Featured as part of the The Blade Chamber Series
Sunday September 14, 2008 7:00PM

Description:

The whimsical and the fantastic dominate this first chamber series concert, an examination of Tales and Dances. A lyrical evocation of a Spanish bullfighter opens the evening, followed by a surreal excerpt from a ballet score where the rhythms of the jazz age animate a soap opera-style romance between kitchen utensils. The Fantasy pieces by Robert Schumann are an exercise in pure melody, and have been transcribed for clarinet, violin, and cello. Principal Cello Martha Reikow performs these heartfelt miniatures. The final piece is a woodwind quintet written by jazz clarinetist extraordinaire Paquito d’Rivera that draws inspiration from African, South American and Latin American dance rhythms.
Points of Interest:
·         Paquito d’Rivera was a founding member of Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, a fifteen-piece group that explored the influence of Latin and Caribbean influences on jazz. One of the movements of Aires Tropicales is a tribute to Dizzy.
·         The Revue de cuisine, by Bohislav Martinů, was one of his first popular successes. Brian Large, in his book on Martinů, sums up the plot as follows:

The marriage of Pot and Lid is in danger of being broken up by the suave Twirling Stick. Pot succumbs to his flattery. Dishcloth makes eyes at Lid but is challenged to a duel by Broom. Pot, however, tires of Twirling Stick and longs for Lid's caresses, but Lid cannot be found anywhere. Suddenly an enormous foot appears from the wings and kicks him back on stage. Pot and Lid kiss and make up and, flirting once again, Twirling Stick goes off with Dishcloth.
