Description:

Vincent Persichetti, who wrote serenades for a wide variety of instrumentations, was surely tempted by the flute and harp, one of music’s most felicitous pairings. His eight miniature movements explore all of the timbral possibilities created by this grouping of instruments. A somewhat more unusual pairing is that of piccolo and contrabassoon. Narrator Robert Clemens, a cellist in the orchestra, joins his colleagues Mary Scudder and Nora Schankin to illuminate the story of the Bear and the Nightingale.

Beethoven’s Fourth String Quartet, his first in a minor key, has proven to be one of his most popular, with its turbulent initial Allegro, the charming fugal second movement that takes the place of the typical slow movement, and the exciting Rondo that concludes the work. Elgar’s Piano Quintet is less frequently performed. However, when the four Toledo Symphony musicians performing the piece tonight were introduced to the work by visiting artist William Wolfram in May of 2008, they unanimously agreed that the Quintet needed to be performed in its entirety on this Series.
