Description:
The three other works on this program span the gamut of moods and textures. The Dohnanyi Serenade for String Trio, despite its light-hearted name, is brilliant and virtuosic in character, with a particularly exciting central scherzo. Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata is one of the most performed large works for viola; the piece is dramatic, powerful and expansive. Brahms’s Clarinet Trio, by contrast, is autumnal, gentle, and nostalgic.
Mark Sforzini’s newly-commissioned Sextet for woodwinds and piano receives its second performance on our final chamber series concert of the year. Commissioned in memory of Gladys Marie Preis, the three movement work received its world premiere in St. Petersburg, Florida. This performance serves as a memorial for Ms. Preis, on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of her birth.
