Scales and Such

Knowledge of scales makes many things easier -- sight reading, ensemble music, memorization, technical facility -- and they are an important part of youth orchestra auditions and OMEA competitions.  Scales are also much more fun to practice in a group!  This class will explore the magic of the circle of fifths and key relationships.  We will play games building scales and identifying key signatures. And we will play scales, scales, and more scales -- forward, backward, in harmony, with a tuner, in races, with our eyes closed, standing on our heads (you get the idea)!

No previous string experience required. This will be a traditional method-book-based class that will take you from the very beginning stages of posture and set up to learning to read notation, bow technique, and ensemble basics. We will end the session with an informal performance for your families. You will need your own instrument for this class. Limited instruments will be available for use on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up early!  Parents of current string students may use their child’s full-size instrument.
