Welcome from the Artistic Director / Conductor

Congratulations and welcome to the Toledo Youth Orchestras.  Celebrating its 61st season, the TYO is proud to continue its partnership with the Toledo Public Schools, the Toledo Art Museum, and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.  We are also indebted to the efforts of your numerous private teachers and school music programs.

The following materials will serve to outline general policy and procedures for membership in the Toledo Youth Orchestras. While we are not a professional orchestra, at all times we should be professionally minded. This includes rehearsals, performances, and all TYO events. Your performance and demeanor are a direct reflection on the many organizations that serve to support our orchestra.

Carefully review the information provided, as some policies may be different. Also, note the addition of multiple opportunities to work with Toledo Symphony Orchestra musicians, free admission to TSO performances, scholarship and concerto performance opportunities, and world premiere performances.

Every effort will be made to respect your time. Rehearsals will begin on time and they will end on time. In the limited amount of rehearsal, we must prepare to perform at a high level, which will require practice. I will always give you 100%, and I ask that each of you reciprocate this commitment.

I am honored to work with each of you. Please remain proactive with any issues as they arise, and you will quickly come to realize I will help you in any way possible. I am looking forward to a wonderful season of great music.

Musically yours,

Dr. Kenneth Thompson
Artistic Director/Conductor

Policies and Guidelines

Attendance

All TYO members are expected to attend all rehearsals and scheduled events. Regular attendance is required to maintain membership in the orchestra. It is the student's responsibility to arrive before 6:30 pm to warm-up and tune. Excessive problems with attendance and punctuality are grounds for dismissal from the orchestra. All attendance related issues are to be considered by the Directors to determine appropriate measures for all absences.

All absences must be PRECEDED by an absence form, except in cases of emergency, to be eligible for consideration as an excused absence. It is the responsibility of the student to give the absence form to Mrs. Sampson before an anticipated absence. In cases of emergency, please call Dr. Thompson at 419.372.8104 before the rehearsal and provide the form at the next attended rehearsal.

Any student that misses more than one rehearsal in preparation for one concert (based on 8 rehearsals) will not be allowed to perform that concert. An unexcused absence from a sectional rehearsal or dress rehearsal will result in the student not being able to perform in that concert. Students cannot be excused from any sectional rehearsal, dress rehearsal or concert without the expressed permission of the Directors.

Attendance will be taken at every rehearsal.

Rehearsals

It is the responsibility of all Toledo Youth Orchestra members to be aware of all rehearsal dates and times. Please take the time to study the schedule. Regular rehearsals are generally held on Monday evening, but there are a few exceptions to accommodate holidays and/or concert dates. Please remember to check the schedule regularly.

Members should arrive 15 minutes before rehearsal to warm-up and tune. The concertmaster will begin the tuning at 6:30. On days when sectional rehearsals occur, students will report to rooms as posted by instrument and location.

Every effort will be made to respect your time. Typically rehearsals will start with the largest works and then release players as needed. You will know in advance if you will be released from rehearsal pending repertoire.

Rehearsal cancellation

Due to inclement weather, rehearsals may be cancelled. If Toledo Public Schools are closed, there will NOT be a rehearsal. Please watch the News Channel 13 crawl for the latest information.  If inclement weather persists during after school hours, although school may have be in session on that day, please watch the above crawl for after school cancellations. As always, if the conditions are dangerous, please make a choice based on safety.

Music

It is expected that each member will demonstrate proper care, storage, and handling of equipment that has been assigned, including music and folders. All such music and/or equipment shall be returned in good condition upon request.

Every TYO member will be given music for practice and rehearsal purposes. It is the responsibility of the student member to bring his/her music and a pencil with eraser to each rehearsal. Do not depend on a stand partner to bring music.

All music given to Toledo Youth Orchestra members is the property of the Toledo Youth Orchestra, the Toledo Symphony, or other rental agents and must be returned upon request. It is expected that TYO members will keep music in good condition and any markings must be made in pencil only. Members will be given photocopies to take home for practice.

Students are responsible for any loss or damage to TYO equipment, including folders.

Concert Dress

Ladies:            White long sleeve blouse (not off-white or cream), long black skirt (floor length)
or full-cut black pants, black hosiery, black shoes

Gentlemen:      White long sleeve dress shirt (not off-white or cream), black bow tie
Long black pants, black socks, black shoes

Please: No jeans, sweats, spandex, or T-shirts

Membership Conditions

1. Members must be enrolled as a member in good standing in his/her respective school band or orchestra. Exceptions will be made if there is no appropriate group in which a member may participate or there is a direct academic scheduling conflict. All issues related to membership in school programs will be considered individually in consultation with the school music program director.

2. Members must study regularly with a qualified private teacher.

Concerto Auditions

Each fall auditions will be held to allow students to perform as a soloist with the TYO. We will accommodate as many performers as we can, but spots are limited. There is no fee to audition, but you must provide your own accompanist. You must also audition with the work you plan to perform with the orchestra. If you have specific questions about this, please feel free to contact Dr. Thompson.
