Music Director of the Toledo Symphony (USA), conductor Alain Trudel has been praised for his “immense talent as conductor, musician and performer” (La Presse). He is also Music Director of l’Orchestre Symphonique de Laval, Principal Youth and Family Conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Principal Guest conductor of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. Trudel was also the CBC Radio Orchestra conductor, taking the orchestra to new heights of artistic quality, as well as public and critical acclaim.
Trudel has conducted every major orchestra in Canada as well as orchestras in the UK, USA, Sweden, Brazil, Italy, Russia, Japan, Hong-Kong, Malaysia and Latin America. Trudel made his Opera de Montréal debut in 2009 in Mozart’s Magic Flute and conducted the live recording of their 30th anniversary gala. He has been a regular guest since and in March 2017 he conducted to great acclaim (“The entire audience was on its feet for another standing ovation, with concertgoers shouting “wow” and “bravo.” Rolling Stone Magazine, “The Wall Triumphs in Montréal.” Le Figaro, Paris) the world premiere operatic version of “The Wall”. Trudel will also lead the american premiere at the Cincinnati Opera in July 2018.
Always committed to upcoming generations of musicians, Trudel was Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra from 2012 to 2014 and has regularly been invited to conduct the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. From 2011 to 2015 Trudel was Professor and conductor of the orchestra and opera orchestra at the University of Western and is now guess professor for orchestra and opera at the University of Ottawa.
First known to the public as “the Jascha Heifetz of the trombone” (Le monde de la musique), Alain Trudel has been a guest soloist with orchestras worldwide including Philharmonique de Radio-France, Hong-Kong Philharmonic, Austrian Radio Orchestra, Festival Musica Strasbourg (France), Klangbogen Festival (Vienna), Akiyoshidai and Hamamatsu festival (Japan). Alain is also a respected composer with performances across America and in Asia.
Alain Trudel was the first Canadian to be a Yamaha international artist, and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Virginia Parker, Charles Cros (France), Opus prize and Heinz Unger prizes. He has been named an Ambassador of Canadian Music by the Canadian Music Centre and received a Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2012.
Michael Lang has been a resident Director / Choreographer for The Toledo Ballet since 2007. He has created eleven original full length productions for Toledo Ballet including: Ballet Tapestry (2007); Outside the Lines (2008); Press One for More Options (2010), Museum of Dreams (2011), If These Walls Could Dance (2012), From Heart to Quill (2014), Alice in Wonderland (2015) The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (2016), Tales of Grimm…(2017), Broadway at the Ballet (2018), and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2019).
Other choreographic credits include: Original Source with TSO (2019), Degas and the Dance—Awkward Girl with TMA (2015), All are One with TMA—inspired by and interactively performed with Artist Pineree Sanpitak’s Anything Can Break (2015); Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring with TSO (2015). Tied Notes (2013), The Soldier’s Tale with TSO (2012); and Révérence—A Tribute to Marie Vogt (2009).
Michael performed for over three decades in Indianapolis (where he is originally from), Chicago, Los Angeles, Hamburg Germany, Miami, Orlando, and New York City. Michael was a dancer, high aerial tumbler, and a stuntman and he performed for more than a decade in the original Los Angeles & NYC productions of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Michael is a Certified Personal Trainer, a NCPT Certified Pilates instructor, and a NY, OH, & MI Licensed Massage Therapist. At the Toledo Ballet he teaches Contemporary Dance, Musical Theater, Acting, Conditioning, Pilates, and Ballerina Warrior (a self-defense class for girls). Michael is also head of Performance Outreach and he is the Director of The Toledo Ballet Pilates & Wellness Studio.
Christopher Dietz composes music inspired by a wide variety of sources, both real and conceptual. Poetry, sound as sculpture and color, how toddlers play, deep time and the cosmos, rhythm as geometry, religion and politics, animal behavior, and the music of others are a few of the subjects that have informed his musical imagination. A similarly diverse approach to the creation of each new piece has resulted in a collection of works distinct in their surface features yet bound together by a common vitality, nuanced palette, and a commitment to engaging with others.
In recent years, Christopher’s works have been premiered in Ghent (Belgium), London, Auvillar (France), Montreal, Ottawa, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Houston, Phoenix and Salt Lake City, among others. His music has been performed by numerous contemporary ensembles including Alarm Will Sound, Decoda, Ensemble Échappé, NODUS, The Orchestra of the League of Composers, Ogni Suono, Duo Scorpio, The McCormick Percussion Group, The Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, The East Coast Contemporary Ensemble, The Chicago Ensemble, Trio Kavak, Palomar, TACTUS Ensemble, Dark in the Song, The Color Field Ensemble, as well as traditional ensembles such as L’Orchestre de la Francophonie, The San Jose Chamber Orchestra, The Beau Soir Trio, The Orange County Symphony, The Toledo Symphony, the University of Michigan Symphonic Band and additional university ensembles across the United States.
His work has been featured at new music festivals such the Civic Orchestra of Chicago's New Music Workshop, NUNC!, soundSCAPE (Italy), The Etchings Festival of Contemporary Music (France), The Queens New Music Festival, New Music on the Point, Florida State's Biennial Festival, Mizzou New Music Summer Festival, Tutti Festival of New Music and the MusicX Festival, among others.
Residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Copland House, Canada’s Banff Centre, The Camargo Foundation (Cassis, France) and the Blue Mountain Center have been important milestones in the development of Christopher's compositional voice. Recognition of his work has come from honors and awards including ASCAP’s Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, The Minnesota Orchestra Reading Sessions and Composer Institute, The Riverside Symphony Composer Reading Project (NYC), The Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music, Random Access Music, The Utah Arts Festival’s Orchestral Commission Prize as well as several academic awards, grants and scholarships. Christopher's music has been released on New Focus, AMP, Navona, American Modern, and Cambria Records.
Christopher holds a Ph.D. in composition and theory from the University of Michigan where he studied with William Bolcom, Bright Sheng, Michael Daugherty, Betsy Jolas, and Andrew Mead. In addition, he holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music where he worked with Nils Vigeland and Giampaolo Bracali and the University of Wisconsin where his teachers included Stephen Dembski and Joel Naumann. He has been on the faculty at Hillsdale College and the Oberlin Conservatory. Christopher is an associate professor at Bowling Green State University where he teaches composition and directs the new music ensemble.
