On Sunday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle Theater, members the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras (TSYO) will perform side-by-side with professional Toledo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) musicians in a massive orchestra. Over 250 TSO musicians and students will participate in the Side-by-Side concert; expect to see and hear over 120 performers on stage at one time.
The TSO/TSYO Side-by-Side concert is a unique opportunity for students to share the Peristyle stage and develop musical relationships with professional musicians. The TSO musicians coach and mentor the TSYO students throughout two rehearsals leading up to the final performance.
The program will open with Korngold’s Overture to Der Schneemann. Then, the TSYO Concert Strings and Symphonic Orchestra join the TSO for selections by Telemann, Mozart, Bizet, and more. The Philharmonic Orchestra will close the program with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol.
“What a wonderful opportunity for all of the TSYO members to perform these great orchestral gems sitting beside the professional musicians of the TSO! It is an experience that will remain with them for a lifetime. During my years of association with the TSYO, it has been very gratifying to see this annual event continue to grow and flourish,” said Dorothy Coats, TSYO Manager.
The TSYO Concert Strings and Symphonic Orchestra rehearse under the direction of conductor Patrick Barrett and the TSYO Philharmonic Orchestra rehearses under the direction of conductor Wasim Hawary.

As part of the core educational mission of the Toledo Symphony, the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestra bring together over 200 of the most talented students from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan in an atmosphere of musical excellence. Dedicated staff members and musicians work hard to give a top quality musical education to all students regardless of financial circumstance. The Toledo Youth Orchestras have been in existence for over 65 years, starting out as a small group of friends meeting for fun, the organization grew into what we know today.
The TSYO currently includes three orchestras: the Philharmonic, Symphonic, and Concert Strings that perform 4 concerts per season. With the addition of a third orchestra in 2011, the TSYO is able to serve students ages 8-18 from over 50 area schools. We aim to find a place in the orchestra where each student will be challenged to grow musically with skill-appropriate repertoire. The Toledo Youth Symphony Orchestra (TSYO) draws the most talented young musicians from northwest Ohio and southern Michigan. The opportunity to perform with a group of musicians with similar dedication to musicianship and quality of performance is a wonderful supplemental experience for serious young musicians.
Membership is by audition only and students can be placed in one of three groups: Philharmonic and Symphonic ensembles serve as a full orchestral experience, while Concert Strings is dedicated to prepare string students for more complex repertoire. Student musicians in the youth orchestras are actively involved with performers from the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. From coachings, to sectionals, to the incredible opportunity to perform side by side with the TSO.
Most important, the TSYO is committed to performing the highest quality literature from the orchestra repertoire while providing students with an incredible education.
