After two sold out performances of Alice in Wonderland in 2015, the Toledo Ballet continues the story of Alice through Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, Alice Through the Looking Glass featuring Toledo Symphony musicians. The Toledo Ballet will end their 2018-2019 season with two performances on Friday, April 26 at 7:30 PM and Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 2 PM at the Valentine Theatre.
Just like Alice in Wonderland, Alice enters a fantastical world, this time, by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. This production offers an explosion of varied dance types—from classical ballet to contemporary—reflecting Toledo Ballet's extensive curriculum. Toledo Ballet’s Resident Choreographer Michael Lang offers a fresh and compelling take on this story.
“My choreography is a bit eclectic and includes everything from hip-hop to ballet,” says Michael Lang, Resident Choreographer for the Toledo Ballet. “I used Lewis Carroll’s book as inspiration, but we are not merely retelling this classic tale through dance. Audiences will witness Alice literally transform from childhood to young adult. Our Looking Glass World journeys her through modern day trials and tribulations as she reflects and learns what it means to be her own woman.”
The role of Alice will be performed by three Toledo Ballet dancers in this coming of age story: Fiona Barnhizer (young Alice), Olivia Beauchamp (middle Alice), and Lauren Woodward (teen Alice). The plot is centered around Alice as she encounters Carroll's well-known characters Tweedledum & Tweedledee, Mad Hatter, and Humpty Dumpty. Struggling to find her Looking Glass World voice, she thoughtfully transitions from a childlike pawn into the queendom of adolescence.
Two productions of Alice Through the Looking Glass will take place on Friday, April 26 at 7:30 PM and Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 2 PM at the Valentine Theater. Tickets start at $25 and are available at toledoballet.com or by calling the box office at 419.246.8000.
